Usha Vance is a very public work individual.
Her husband, JD Vance, a rapid political promotion to deputy commander of President Donald Trump, has left her successful legal career and has fallen into an elected ritual role with manuals, automatic global platforms and much scrutiny from the American people and the media.
She is facing her first test this weekend. After talking publicly and taking part in media interviews during the seven weeks of the Trump administration, Usha Vance has embarked on her first major solo trip as a second lady, leading the US delegation into the world winter game of Turin, Italy, which is attending Italy’s Turin, coaches, families and fans. She attended the opening ceremony on Saturday.
She has already joined the Vice President for a high-stakes trip to Europe, appearing on his side in France and Germany, and joining a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And behind the scenes, a familiar source tells CNN, where the second lady brings together a small team of staff, bringing three children back to life at the Navy Observatory, settling in that role, she has her platform and responsibility.
But what they are remains a mystery.
As the 39-year-old former Supreme Court clerk considers the platform and impact she hopes, Vance is described by people who know her as thoughtful, whip smart and decisive. She is also very protected. CNN contacted dozens of friends, colleagues and family members. No one agreed to talk about the record about her.
JD Vance appeared as the president’s attack dog. His interjection, for example, escalated a showdown between Ukrainian President Voldy Mee Zelensky and Trump’s oval office – his wife remained primarily under the radar.
But being the figure at the top of the new administration alongside first lady Melania Trump, who took her own approach to the role of a spouse, is a delicate dynamic she has to navigate.
Usha Vance appeared alongside First Lady at major events such as the inauguration and the president’s speech to Congress, but it is unclear whether they are effectively involved as Melania Trump spent four weeks away from Washington at the start of the new administration.
Asked if she spoke to her role with First Lady by Fox News during the campaign, Vance said she received advice from various friends who unexpectedly found herself in the spotlight.
The spokesmouth for the first and second ladies did not respond to CNN’s request for comments on their relationship.
Vance was the youngest second woman to take on a role since the Truman administration, and was the first to raise school-age children at the Navy Observatory since the Clinton era.
Born and raised in San Diego by parents who emigrated from India, Vance is also the first person of color to become a second lady.
“It goes without saying that JD and I meet, that falling in love and getting married is a testament to this great nation,” she said in her remarks at the Republican National Convention in July, saying that her husband “has come close to our differences with curiosity and enthusiasm.”
Vance attended Yale University where he majored in history, coached local students outside the classroom, volunteered with the homeless, and studied ballet. She spent a year graduating in China and later won the prestigious Gates Scholarship at Cambridge University to pursue a Masters in Philosophy.
But it went back to Yale and met JD Vance, a classmate of a fellow law school.

“We were friends in the beginning. So who doesn’t want to be friends with JD? He was the most interesting person I know now. She said in her RNC speech.
After graduating in 2013, Vances got married in June 2014, and JD Vance’s bestselling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” was released two years later.
Like her husband, Usha Vance appears to have made her own political change. According to public records, she was a registered Democrat from 2010 to 2014, but was written for then Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the Columbia District Circuit Court of Appeals from 2014 to 2015, and for conservative Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts from 2017 to 2018.
Pushing her husband’s previous comments on Trump tribe, asking how she felt about the GOP candidate in an August interview with Fox News, Vance expressed Muted Support.
“If I felt that the ticket, a Trump Vance ticket, could have done something really good for the country, I wasn’t here,” she told host Ainsley Ierhalt.
When her husband was chosen as Trump’s running mate, Vance resigned from her law firm, where she worked on complicated civil lawsuits and frequently existed on his side on the campaign trail. Vance, a well-known bookworm, is often observed in her latest readings, telling NBC News that she is reading the epic “Iliad” to catch up with her eldest son “who is obsessed with mythology.”
The three little ones from Vances, Ewan, 7, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 3, are often involved in rides, including February trips to Europe.
“Giving them a stable, normal, happy life and nurture is paramount to us,” Usha Vance told Iarhard during the campaign.
Vance describes her advice role for her husband as a true storyteller.
“I think he deserves to have someone in his life who hears it straight from him,” she said in an interview with Fox News. And that becomes part of the way he thinks about things. ”

On his part, JD Vance believes his wife is encouraging his authenticity.
“The best advice she gave me when it comes to politics is, “Don’t let them filter you.” And in politics, they got consultants, media experts, and pollers. And Usha just said, “Just be yourself. He said when he recently appeared at a conservative political action meeting.
Taking her advice, the Vice President joked, but there are restrictions.
“One of the advice she gave me a week ago was, “It should be better on social media.” I don’t know what advice I give,” he said with a laugh.
Usha Vance has yet to disclose any important priorities, and spoke to NBC News a few days before the election to provide a few clue about her interests and goals for her work as a second lady.
“It’s been a very intense and busy experience and I don’t give a lot of thought about my role and responsibility. It’s not something I’ve ever really never heard of – that’s something I know badly,” Vance told NBC at the time.
She continued. See what happens on November 5th, gather some information yourself and take it from there. There are certainly things I’m interested in, but I really don’t know how everything fits into this role. ”
Her recent predecessor approached the role of amorphous in a variety of ways. As the second woman, Jill Biden continued her career as a teacher, but found a way to support education and military families, and launched the “participation” initiative with then-Lady First, Michelle Obama.
Karen Pence took an active role in amplifying art therapy initiatives, and also taught elementary schools and continued her job at nearby schools.

The second gentleman, Doug Emov, made history as the first Jewish spouse of the President or Vice President, and found his voice in the aftermath of October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel when he tried to oppose the rise of anti-Semitism. During the presidential transition, Emov and Vance both left legal careers to help their spouses as vice presidents, but spoke on the phone for about 45 minutes.
According to Kate Bennett, a former CNN journalist and author who documented the first family in America, Vance needs to navigate the “unnatural and natural relationship” between the first woman and the second woman.
“The president and vice president, and the first and second women, are naturally put together as foursomes, but that’s completely unnatural. The two spouses are different people from different backgrounds and sometimes they don’t like each other,” Bennett said.
In the case of Karen Pence and Melania Trump, Bennett reported in her 2019 First Lady biography, “Free, Melania.”
“Karen Pence and Melania Trump never went down to their right foot and stayed that way,” Bennett said.
The difficult dynamics between the two were on display when they traveled together. Pence was not invited to sit in the first lady’s cabin on the plane, but instead sat with the staff. And recently, four years after Donald Trump supporters asked Mike Pence to be hanged at the Capitol, Karen Pence bowed as both Trumps arrived at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and refused to exchange pleasure.
Vance, Bennett said: It would be interesting to see how they work together. ”
