An armed adult man was shot by a US Secret Service representative outside the White House on Sunday morning, the agency announced shortly after the incident.
President Donald Trump was not in the White House on Sunday morning.
According to the chief of Secret Service Communications Anthony Guglielmi, the USSS received information about a “suicidal” travelling to DC from Indiana. In a statement, Grielmi said that USSS members saw someone matching the description near the White House and found a parked car.
“As the officers approached, individuals wielded firearms and armed conflicts continued, during which time they were fired by staff,” Grielmi said.
The person is taken to hospital and his condition remains unknown.
The US Secret Service said no members of the personnel were injured.
On March 8, DC Metropolitan Police sent a “rag” from police in North Manchester, Indiana about a 27-year-old man driving to the Washington, D.C. area who was armed, emotionally disturbed, and possibly attempting to attempt suicide by officers, multiple law enforcement sources told CNN.
Officials found it on foot just outside the Eisenhower executive office building, about a block away from the White House, sources said. According to law enforcement agencies who were described in the incident, officers confronted the man who pointed the gun at him, ignored orders to drop the weapon, and turned the gun in the direction of a secret service agent and officer. The officers then fired an unknown number of shots. According to briefed sources, an additional weapon, a rifle, was found in the car.
The DC Metropolitan Police Interior Service Force’s forced investigation team said it would lead the investigation into the incident as it is the main body of officials involved in the shootings in the District of Columbia.
The DC Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement Sunday that there were no further details of the investigation.
