We can only make our own predictions about the newly expanded College Football Playoff until the 2024 season begins. The only certainty is that Notre Dame cannot earn a seed higher than No. 5, since the top four seeds are reserved for conference champions.
While most people expect the Irish to host a first-round game, Brad Crawford of 247Sports says that won’t be the case. Crawford released his bowl game predictions for this season, and he has the Irish in a No. 5 seed vs. No. 11 seed matchup, but he projects a trip to Ole Miss as the No. 11 seed.
The Irish and Rebels haven’t played against each other much in ages, and haven’t done so in a long time – the Rebels are the only team the Irish have lost to in their championship season in 1977, and the Irish won the only time they met in South Bend in 1985. Historically, this isn’t much of a rivalry.
Still, the Irish can use this as bulletin board fodder: They know they’re good enough to host a first-round game at Notre Dame Stadium, and this should give them extra motivation to put together a season that warrants that honor.
