Hair can become dry and brittle, especially during the summer months you spend outdoors. Think of it as a beach or swimming in a chlorine-loaded pool. Extreme hair care products can also damage your hair, leading to frizz, breakage and hair loss. This DIY hair oil treatment will help improve scalp health for healthier and natural hair.
No matter what type of hair you have, I love that it’s an easy way to get cheap and healthy hair. I used this hair care routine for my 4 year old daughter a few years ago to make my hair more manageable. Not only did it help to polish her hair, it didn’t stimulate her soft head. This recipe is so simple and difficult to call it a recipe, but it worked well so I had to share it!
It will leave your hair oily, so make sure to shampoo and rinse off when you’re done!
DIY Hair Oil
I have another DIY hair growth oil recipe that acts as a hair conditioner that I keep in my dropper bottle. Rosemary Hair Growth Oil is different from this DIY Hair Oil, and it’s like a deep conditioning treatment. Both are great for healthy hair and scalp!
This hair treatment helps to improve dry hair with natural oils and has become a regular staple in my hair care routine. It helps reduce hair, nourish hair follicles and improve dandruff. This DIY hair oil features magnesium-rich Epsom salts and conditioning olive oil and coconut oil for a healthy shine.
We also included raw honey for its unique ability to help hair. Raw honey promotes the growth of skin cells, including the scalp, and moisturizes the hair and scalp by adding nutrients. Honey is also naturally antibacterial and antifungal and can be used as a dandruff treatment.
This is how you can make it!

Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix well with a dip blender. If you don’t have a blender or the ingredients aren’t combined well, heat the ingredients (except essential oils) over low heat on the stove. Whisk the ingredients to combine warmly. If you are not using a stove, the Epsom salt may still be a little rough. Once applied, it melts and tackles the hair.
If you are using it, add essential oils to the warm oil.
Mix or shake the mixture well just before applying. Massage a warm (not hot!) oil treatment through your hair and scalp on the sink or shower.
Place it on a shower cap (or an old towel) and leave the oil melted for up to 30 minutes.
Wash off the oil in the shower before shampooing.
If your hair is still oily after washing, massage a little baking soda into your hair and remove or use the dry shampoo after showering. If you have really long hair, you may need to double or triple this recipe. Some people have the opposite effect of coconut oil, giving dry hair. If so, use more olive oil, or another carrier oil instead. See the section below for alternative ideas.
Component substitution
Many of Omega’s skincare and hair care recipes use olive oil and coconut oil because of the fatty acids and other benefits of omega. Some people find coconut oil dry to their hair and skin. Other carrier oils work well too. If you want something a little oily, try sweet almond oil instead of olive oil. Avocado oil is also very nourishing for hair and is a great option.
Adding a small amount of jojoba oil, caster oil, or argan oil to your mix is also a great way to treat your scalp! You can also add antioxidant vitamin E. There is some evidence that Vitamin E can help hair growth and healthier scalp.
Optional essential oils
It’s not entirely necessary, but to get more benefits, you can add some essential oils to your DIY hair oil. They are very concentrated so you only need a few drops. Do not use properly on young children.
Try a few drops of rosemary essential oil for hair growth. Cedarwood and lavender essential oils have also proven their benefits for hair growth. Tea tree oil is suitable for dandruff, and peppermint essential oils have a cooling and refreshing effect. Don’t let it go into your eyes!
This DIY hair oil is a great way to give your hair a little extra love and attention!
