Thousands of travellers stagnated Monday morning after a massive blackout at Baltimore Washington International Airport caused major flight delays.
About 150 flights have been delayed and 50 flights have been cancelled at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, according to Flight Tracking website FlightAware.
The airport said many flights that were supposed to arrive have been diverted as crews worked to restore power. The airport provided X updates throughout the day. At midday, they announced that electricity has “full recovery” but passengers will continue to be affected by delays.
“Expect a long queue with ticket counters, checkpoints and concessions. It will take some time for full regular operations to resume this afternoon,” the airport posts, advises travelers to check flight information with a specific airline.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement to Fox News Digital that the blackouts have affected Terminals A, B and C, and that “FAA has suspended Southwest Airlines flights.”
According to the airport, some flights relied on using Air Force stairs to drain passengers.

A Baltimore Gas and Electric Company spokesperson said the outage, originally reported at about 7:40 a.m., was caused by a power line near the airport, according to Fox Baltimore.

Police said the road just south of the airport was closed as a fire broke out and wires fell.

According to the FAA, Monday’s delays accounted for 6% of the total flight delays that occurred at BWI airport.
