Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max Streaming Service said it would keep CNN Max News and BR Sports Offerings free at the higher tier of its services, but it will no longer be available at the cheapest and ad-supported base tier.
The news said executives hope to drive the largest subscriber numbers globally above the past 150 million, partly due to its ambitious overseas expansion plans, as WBD announced quarterly revenues after the market closed on Wednesday. The streaming service will operate in about half the territory of its major competitors Netflix and Disney, but it expects it to reach completely over time, according to a company spokesman. WBD shares rose nearly 11% on Thursday to around $11.50 on the news.
“More than last year, we have had the opportunity to assess how users are involved in Max’s sports and news. We have been actively involved in exploring ways to evolve the US sports distribution ecosystem. For now, we believe that the best place for that content is in the standard and premium tier.” “This update will allow subscribers to continue to enjoy the coveted access within MAX, while also allowing for continued investment in premium sports and news portfolio.”
From March 30th, CNN Max and BR Sports will no longer be available in the low-end max class, a nine-month basic, including ADS.
Warner Bros Discovery shares are up this week, particularly after earnings on Wednesday.

News and sports announcements clear at least one question about some of Max’s potentially tenacious, but most expensive content.
Over the past year or so, Max has carried an array of sports that differs depending on the season and territory under BR Sports, a shortened moniker of BREACHER REPORT SPORTS UNIT. When they first added sports to Max, the company initially said it would offer sports for a short period of free time before charging an add-on that would be expected to be around $10 a month.
“This path is not pursued at this time,” reads the company’s release.
BR Sports offers include NBA and women’s similar league basketball, MLB baseball, NCAA March Madness Basketball Tournament, parts of Big 12 and Big East College Sports, NASCAR, national soccer matches for men and women, NHL hockey, FIA WEC endurance car racing, cycling and Aue Pro Wrestling. The NBA Games will be resigning from service under new league contracts with other providers this season.
BR Sports also features sports-related programming, including the Dan Le Batard show The Sports-Talk with Stugotz and the prank show hosted by NBA star Anthony Davis.
The pioneer of WBD’s 24-hour news network CNN has been in flux for several years, changing ownership and leadership, particularly after the US presidential election, causing television ratings to plummet.
CNN’s latest CEO, former New York Times and BBC chief Mark Thompson, have created a digital transition plan for the 24-hour cable new spioneer over the past year. The company has invested $70 million in building its latest online presence, Thompson recently told employees. Such digital investments are essential to CNN’s long-term success, especially given the link between cordcuts and the decline of cable networks as viewers move towards streaming options.
Max’s news offering includes CNN Live Feed and on-demand programming featuring CNN personalities such as Anderson Cooper and Kate Bolduan. The original programming includes I Got Got News for You show featuring comedians Roy Wood Jr., Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black, along with stubborn guys like real-time with Bill Maher, and John Oliver, who won last week’s Tonight’s Multi-Emmy Award.
Antennas have recently shown that Max Churn, an issue with almost every major streaming service other than Netflix, has significantly reduced the significant reduction in the bundles between Disney’s Hulu and Disney+ Services.
