President Donald Trump said on Saturday he was trying to reclaim his money for the billions of dollars sent to support the Ukrainian war with Russia.
His comments came when Washington and Kiev negotiated the mineral resources trade that Trump hoped for as wartime compensation his predecessor Joe Biden gave to Ukraine.
It was the latest twist of the first month of a whirlwind since he took office. Meanwhile, he disrupted our foreign policy by conducting a diplomatic overture towards the Kremlin over the heads of Ukraine and Europe.
Trump told delegates at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) near Washington:
“We want something to give us for all the money we make. We want rare earths and oil, what we can get.
“It’s not fair, so we’re going to get the money back, and we’ll see, but I think we’re pretty close to the deal.
“Hours ago, sources told AFP that Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelensky is not ready to sign such a deal despite increasing pressure from the US.”
The war of words
Trump’s special envoy Keith Kellogg, who met Zelensky this week, said he understands that the Ukrainian president is “critical” to sign a contract with the United States.
However, a Ukrainian source told AFP that Kyiv needed a guarantee first.

“What kind of partnership is this?”
Trump is seeking “$500 billion worth of rare earth minerals” to supplement the aid given to Kiev.
“There is no US obligation to contracts regarding guarantees or investments. Everything about them is very vague and they want to extract $500 billion from us,” a Ukrainian source told AFP. Ta.
“What kind of partnership is this? And why should we give $500 billion, there is no answer,” the source said, adding that Ukraine had proposed a change.
The United States has given Ukraine more than $6 billion in military aid since the Russian invasion.
The Kiel Institute, a German economic research institute, said from 2022 to the end of 2024, the US gave a total of 114.2 billion euros ($119.8 billion) in financial, humanitarian and military aid.
