New Delhi:
In a joint television interview with billionaire Elon Musk, US President Donald Trump revealed that India cannot escape Washington’s mutual tariffs. In a conversation with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, President Trump reiterated his stance on world trade and the existing tariff structure between the United States and its partners.
“I told Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi yesterday – he was here – I said, “Here is what we are trying to do: whatever you charge, I will charge you “It’s,” President Trump said. PM. “He (Prime Minister Modi) says, ‘No, no, I don’t like it.” “No, no, whatever you charge, I’m going to charge you.” I do that in every country. ”
India has the world’s highest tariffs on certain imports from the US, especially in the automobile sector where foreign automobile obligations can reach up to 100%. Musk, sitting beside President Trump, confirmed this by saying, “It’s 100% – 100% of automobile imports.”
President Trump replied: “Yeah, it’s peanuts. It’s getting very high.
He argued that such tariffs would make it almost impossible for American companies to sell in India unless they set up manufacturing plants there.
Under the proposed mutual tariff system, the US will impose tariffs on Indian imports at the same level as India collects American goods. “No one can argue with me,” Trump insisted. “If I said 25%, they’d say, ‘Oh, that’s awful.’ I won’t say that anymore… because I say, “No matter what they charge, we will.” And what will you stop? ”
This is not the first time President Trump has clashed with India over tariffs. During his first term he often referred to India as the “customer king” and cited high import duties on US goods. After Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Washington, the two countries have pledged to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 and negotiate a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by the fall of 2025.
