According to a memo obtained by CNN, the Trump administration has ordered that unaccompanied immigrant children be partnered to stop work.
The move is the latest in a series of actions that stripped US immigrants of important resources. This time, we are targeting children and teenagers who cross the southern border without parents.
The Home Office sent an order dated on Tuesday to the Acacia Center for Justice. It said it helped nearly 26,000 children and was released from resettlement custody for refugees.
ORRs, which fall under the Department of Health and Human Services, are accused of caring for unaccompanied immigrant children.
“The administration’s decision to suspend this program undermines legitimate processes, disproportionately affects vulnerable children, and there is a risk of further harm and exploitation for children who have already experienced severe trauma. “It will be,” said Shaina Abel, executive director of Acacia Center for Justice. statement.
The Florence Immigration and Refugee Rights Project, which offers a “know your rights” presentation to children in government detention, also denounced the move.
“The Florence Project, without the services offered through the Unaccompanied Children Program, will force children to represent themselves only in the immigration court, regardless of age. This is for immigrant children. It’s an unprecedented attack,” Florence Project Deputy Director Loxana Aviratinpeane said in a statement.
The suspension order is unlikely to affect children already represented, but sudden cuts in funding could force the group to shrink or close completely.
A few days after President Donald Trump took office, the Justice Department similarly told legal service providers to suspend jobs aimed at supporting immigrants. The order was later revoked without explanation.
