Egg prices are higher due to bird flu. Avocados is already more expensive this year and could follow suit thanks to potential tariffs.
Enjoy the flavor of that avocado toast and enjoy the eggs.
From bird diseases to tariffs, there are multiple troops in the workplace that drives rising breakfast prices.
In January, egg prices hit a record high of $4.95, averaged by $4.95, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Egg prices have risen partially due to the outbreak of avian flu, which spread to dairy cows and in some cases spread to humans. The result was that millions of birds were killed, making eggs more expensive, and it was difficult to find on the shelf.
Avocados are trying to follow the lawsuit for a variety of reasons.
Approximately 90% of the avocados consumed in the US come from Mexico. Mexico is the country that President Donald Trump attacked with 25% tariffs on February 1st. He later announced that tariffs were a month behind.
Taxes are taxes on foreign goods imported into the United States, which insures importers to raise prices to compensate for additional taxes and cover revenue. As a result, consumers can usually bear the brunt of price increases.
Even previous marriages, Avocados, each averaged $0.91, were already 17% higher than the first week of February, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
Gary Williams, professor emeritus of agricultural economics at Texas A&M, said avocados are elastic products, so people buy them regardless of price.
“Taxes on avocado imports are essentially taxes on US avocado consumers, and most of the tariff revenue will be paid by US consumers,” Williams told BI.
The price hikes for breakfast ingredients have already affected consumers.
In New York City, customers pay more for breakfast sandwiches, beloved bacon, eggs and cheese. Meanwhile, Waffle House customers face an additional fee of $0.50 for each egg they order.
It is unclear how long the disease outbreak and the trade war will last, but one thing is certain. Some of our favorite breakfasts may feel like an extravagant quicker than our daily staples.
