Federal prosecutors assigned to a corruption case against New York Mayor Eric Adams resigned on Friday after a furious letter accusing the top judicial leader of the judicial department of searching for a “fool” in the Judicial Department.
Attorney Hagan Skoten is the seventh person to step down from a disastrous effort to dismiss the charges against Adams. Scotter was on administrative leave Thursday after he was a prosecutor in the case and refused to approve his dismissal.
In a letter to Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, Scotten denounced what he called “leveraged terminations.”
“American lawyers will know that our laws and traditions do not allow prosecutors to use other citizens, elected officials to not affect them like this.” Scotten told Bove, a former private lawyer for President Donald Trump.
“If the lawyer in the president’s ear doesn’t try to give him that advice, then he hopes to ultimately find someone who is a fool or a cowardly enough to submit your move. “We’ll do that,” Scotten added. “But it never meant to be me.”
A Harvard alumnus, Scotten, has awarded two bronze stars as Iraqi military commanders. This is an experienced prosecutor who has dealt with several corruption cases in New York, including former mayor Rudy Giuliani. He has also worked on other cases against Bishop Ramoll Whitehead, who was found guilty of multiple counts of fraud, near Adams. Scotten was also secretary to Secretary John Roberts.
CNN reached out to Scotten for comment.
The lawyers denounced justification for Justice Department leadership to attempt to dismiss the case. Deleting the charges allows Adam to devote “full attention and resources” to his fight against illegal immigration and the 2025 reelection campaign.
“The ordered system of freedom supports policy goals for elected officials because it cannot allow the government to use the carrots of dismissal charges or threaten to bring them back again. You can guide him to that extent.”
Adams pleaded not guilty to five federal charges. At this time, the Department of Justice has not filed a motion to dismiss the case against Adams.
