Away from a missed cut at the Torrey Pines, Smalley opened at 67 and opened four birdies on a five-hole stretch in the second round. The 28-year-old American rolled at 6 feet, Eagle Putt birded a difficult par 4 11th place, but bogeyed par 5 15th place when he hit a second shot underwater I did.
Kim, the winner of the 2018 John Deere Classic, missed the cut in two of three tournaments to start the season, but dialed the game at TPC Scottsdale. After opening at 69, he indicted the leaderboard by closing with four straight birdies and shot a 6-under 30 on the back nine.
