Following the first week of annual compliance day of February for national girls and women on Sports Day, Cremmy Perry, a former NFL cheerleader for both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins, has been among the five sports organizations. We held an event at Amalie Arena at the Amalie Arena and had constructive conversations. Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Tampa Bay Sun FC joined forces for an afternoon of celebration for the pioneers of the male-plail industry.
Perry, founder and executive director of Green T-shirt Women of Color Golf and Girls, has launched an outreach programme to catalyze change and representation. She grew up being exposed to sports and different manufacturers in each field. Clemmy Perry’s father, Charles Perry, was one of the first African-American men to win an NFL contract from the Tuskegee Institute. In the 1940s, each NBA team had only one black player. Her father was the Jewelry Ambassador of Detroit. He puts the basketball in Clemmy’s hand and saw a visual representation of her desire to one day have an impact on her own in the world of sports. That dream has become a reality.
“We’re usually focused on our own sports, whether it’s soccer, soccer, volleyball, basketball, but women aren’t usually directed at golf games,” Perry said. “So I’m a corporate executive at three different Fortune 500 companies and ended up losing my job and ‘Well, I’ve always wanted to play golf, so I have time now’ so that’s it.’ So, that layoff. As a result, I started taking golf lessons and it was so broken that I could buy a club that my family jumped in. And our mission, I did not see many women in green, especially women of color. Finished, but I was able to change it for the woman who comes behind me. ”
At any stage of every individual’s career, a support system and a moral compass are important. In Clemmy Perry’s case, her mentor was Dr. Rennie Powell, the second African American woman to play on the LPGA Tour, and after participating in 1967, she competed in over 250 events. Member of the American PGA and LPGA. Her father, William Powell, opened Clearview Golf Course in 1948. This is the first course designed and built entirely by African Americans. Their influence, along with her own beliefs, sparked Perry’s fire.
“It all started with my coaching golf,” Perry said. “Her name is Dr. Renee Powell, this woman is the most decorated African American woman in golf and she took me under her wings. I felt honored and cherished. Her father built the first black-owned and operated golf course in America. When he returned from the Scottish war, she said, everything I know today You are not allowed to play on US golf courses that taught you that your life leaders, along with global statistics, are 4% a minority and less than 1% for me. I was going to use that retirement to enact change.”
