The right-wing of the Japan Airlines plane hit the tail of a Delta Airlines plane on the runway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Wednesday morning, officials said.
The collision occurred around 10:40am, but the plane was under tax, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. Delta said the plane was being tried when the tail was cut off.
No injuries have been reported.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.
The FAA said it has suspended flights to the airport.
The airline said the Delta Flight 737, a Boeing 737 with 142 customers on board, is scheduled to fly from Seattle to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, adding that it has rebooked customers on a new flight.
Japan Airlines said it had been guiding the JL68 flight that was being guided after 172 passengers and 13 crew members arrived from Narita International Airport in Japan when the right-wing of the Boeing 787-9 cut off the tail of the Delta plane. He said he was guiding him.
“We sincerely apologize to all involved for any inconvenience this may cause,” Japan Airlines said in a statement.
A video of the incident posted on social media by someone who said they were on one of the planes appears to show the wings of Japan Airlines stuck to the tail of a Delta plane.
