On January 20, the Trump administration issued administrative measures, other widespread federal funds and policy changes. Universities are working to evaluate the impact of these actions on the noisy Stan and the effects of research companies. There are also members of the university community. This FAQ aims to share real -time information on these impacts and universities. We will continue to update this page as additional information becomes available.
How does the northeast respond to Washington’s new administration’s actions and policies?
North Eastern actively plans to change policies that can affect the university community, our research and education. In December 2024, the university issued a guidance to international students, teachers and staff to return from overseas travel. Other issues of research funding and strategic importance, including student financial assistance, are being monitored closely.

The Trump administration has recently announced the National Health Research Institute (to freeze conferences and travel) and the National Science Foundation (to suspend subsidies). What should teachers and staff who receive the Federal subsidy funds do now?
At present, education and research need to continue as planned. As the recent news has shown, this is the fluid situation we are carefully monitoring. In the event of a future administrative order or pause, we will provide updated guidance as needed. Specific questions related to NORTHEASTERN research subsidies must be instructed to SponsoredResearchQuestions@northereastern.edu.
Some administrative orders refer to diversity, fairness, and inclusiveness. I am currently conducting research on federal funds, including DEI -related activities. Do I need to pause those activities?
Unless a US government’s contract officer issued a suspended work order in the northeast for a specific subsidy, contract, or problem project, a survey was conducted under a previously executed contract with the federal government agency. Teachers should continue to meet these prizes. Continue monitoring litigation and guidance from federal government agencies that can affect universities. Researchers who are asking questions about specific projects need to contact SponsoredresearchQuestions@northereastern.edu.
Did the National Science Foundation request all the funded projects to suspend the work related to “DEIA”?
We thoroughly review portfolios with funds provided by university subsidies to understand the potential range and impact of various messages and administrative orders related to DEIA. This includes the decision on the current administration’s DEIA definition.
Student support
Will the administrative orders or other orders by the new administration risk the federal financial aid funds for students?
Federal financial assistance to students is not currently in danger. An administrative order that tries to freeze the currently pending spending for a court ruling is not applied to individual federal funds. These include the federal financial assistance programs such as Pell Grants, Federal Work Research Programs, and Supplementary Education Subsidies (SEOG).

International problem
The Trump administration is actively increasing immigration laws. NORTHEASTERN has a global campus network with international students, teachers and staff. What is the northeast doing to support the population?
In addition to the guidance issued in December 2024, the northeast has regularly contacted international students, teachers, and staff, and advises their rights and travel to the United States. In everyday life, visiting immigration related to compliance follows the steps established at the campus location. Please contact the immigration advisor’s office for all other visits from the immigration officer.
Where can you ask for support if students, teachers, and staff are worried about immigration status?
Students, faculty members, and staff who have an F-1/J1 non-immigration visa must contact the Global Service Bureau (OGS) about questions and concerns. For teachers and staff with the immigration status based on the Northeast Employment, contact the legal advisor of OgCIMMIGRATION@northern.edu.
If you are concerned about other types of visas that are independent of universities, we recommend that you contact an immigrant lawyer. Members of the Boston North Eastern Community may refer to this guidance from the Massachusetts State Immigration and the Federation of Refugees.
For additional support, NORTHEASTERN offers a wide range of students’ health resources, such as university health and counseling services. Teachers and staff can find support through human resources and use the Ombes for confidential consultation on workplace issues and concerns. Belonging
The administration has shown the intention of terminating the DEI program within the federal government and investigating DEI at major universities. What does that mean for the northeast?
The no -Eastern commitment of accepting the entire global community remains immovable. You can adjust the internal structure and approach to ensure the continuous compliance of the law, but the university’s core value does not change. We believe that accepting our differences and building a community to which we belong to will strengthen the northeast.
How do the northeastern part reconsider the approach to belonging?
Our reconstructed approach is focused on accepting the personal experience of the whole university system in the world and maximizing the impact at the institutional level. This includes education and workshops, encouraging the Affinity Group, sharing best practices, and using data to inform you of how to concentrate on resources and work.
What is the university doing to protect the rights of LGBTQIA+community members?
North Eastern continues to commit to all members of our community with discrimination, harassment, and work environment. In addition, university policies related to non -discrimination and opportunities are completely valid. Several states in which the northeast maintains campus (including MA, ME, CA, WA, VA, NC) has a law that clearly prohibits gender discrimination.
Why are the universities making changes according to the latest orders from the administration?
There is a duty in the Northeast community and society as a whole so that our work can be continued. If it is not compliant with the law, it may be dangerous to expose the financial assistance of students, and research is provided to the federal government in various fields and projects.
