Robbers used explosives to force the doors at a Dutch museum early Saturday morning and stole several gold masterpieces, the statement said.
Police received reports of an explosion at the closed museum in Assen at 3:45 a.m. local time on Saturday. Upon arrival, officers found the museum damaged and the gold masterpiece missing.
A gold Coofenetri helmet on loan from the Romanian National History Museum in Bucharest and three Dacian royal bracelets were stolen by thieves. According to the museum, the artifact was displayed in the exhibition “Dasia – Empire of Gold and Silver.”
“This is a dark day for the closed museum in Assen and the Romanian National History Museum in Bucharest. We are deeply shocked by the events that took place last night at the museum. In its 170 years of existence, there has never been a major incident like this. ”, said Harry Tupan, general director of the Drent Museum.
The museum said it would be closed over the weekend while police conducted an investigation.
No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made so far. Authorities suspect multiple individuals were involved, Dutch police said in a statement.
Police said they received a report of a car fire around 4:15 a.m., but no one was inside the burning car. Authorities suspect the car is connected to the explosion and robbery at the museum. The suspect switched to another vehicle near the fire, police said.
Police asked for help from residents near the museum who may have footage from doorbell cameras or dash cams between 3 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., and recently reported seeing something unusual at the Dress Museum. He asked people who may have been involved to contact police.
