Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan underwent emergency surgery at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital following a knife attack at his Bandra residence early on Thursday. The 54-year-old actor suffered multiple injuries during a collision with an intruder at around 2:30 a.m. local time.
Police sources said Khan spotted the intruder in his 11th-floor apartment and tried to intervene during an argument between the suspect and a domestic staff member. The encounter reportedly left Khan with multiple stab wounds, one of which was close to his spine.
A team of experts performed the two-and-a-half-hour surgery, and additional plastic surgery procedures were also performed. A hospital representative confirmed that Khan’s condition was stable.
The Mumbai crime branch launched an investigation in parallel with local police and deployed seven teams across the city. Authorities are currently reviewing security camera footage and questioning domestic staff.
“The actor and the intruder engaged in a scuffle. The actor is injured and is undergoing treatment. Investigation is underway,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam told news agency ANI.
Khan is a 30-year veteran of the Indian film industry and comes from one of Bollywood’s most prominent dynasties. The son of cricket star Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore, he made his screen debut in 1993 with Parampara. She made her breakthrough with the 1994 films ‘Yeh Dillagi’ and ‘Main Khiladi To Anari’, establishing herself as a leading figure in Hindi cinema.
Throughout his career, Khan received critical acclaim for his performances in films such as ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ (2001), ‘Kal Ho Naaho’ (2003) and ‘Hum Tum’ (2004). He won the Indian National Award for Best Actor for this work. , “Omkara” (2006), and “Tanhaji” (2020). He has also ventured into digital streaming, appearing in Netflix’s Sacred Games and the Prime Video series Tandav. His last release was Devara Part 1, which became one of the biggest hits of 2024. The actor is married to Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan and recently returned from a family vacation in Switzerland with their two children.
Khan’s representative issued a statement confirming the incident, saying, “There was an attempted robbery at Saif Ali Khan’s residence. He is currently in the hospital undergoing surgery. We ask the media and fans to be patient. Please wait. This is a police matter.”
On Thursday afternoon, Khan’s team issued a new statement saying: “Saif Ali Khan has undergone surgery and is out of danger. He is currently recovering and doctors are monitoring his progress. All family members are safe and the police are investigating the incident. Thank you to the doctors and the team at Lilavati Hospital. Thank you to all his fans and well-wishers for their prayers and thoughts during this time.”
