For the second year in a row, nursing has topped U.S. News & World Report’s list of best jobs. But what makes a job “the best”?
“Nursing ranks No. 1 for this year’s best jobs thanks to its important role in health care, flexibility, and strong 10-year career prospects,” said Carly Chase, vice president of careers at U.S. News. It maintains its position.”
“No. 2nd place is IT Manager, 3rd place is Physician Assistant, 4th place is Finance Manager, and 5th place is Software Engineer,” Chase said.
“It’s no surprise to me that four of these five jobs are STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) jobs,” Chase added. “You’ll find that half of the jobs listed are STEM, meaning they could be engineering, science-based, or medical-based.”
She said the rankings are “100% data-driven” and all data comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“It’s as opposed to what’s trending or what you hear from family and friends. This is really trying to provide an objective view,” Chase said.
Why are so many of the top jobs related to STEM?
“Certainly, No. 1 is high pay, the average median wage that we look at. That is an important factor for us. But more importantly, these areas are “This is an area that is predicted to continue to grow significantly in the 2020s,” Chase said.

The 2025 Best Jobs ranking provides job seekers with information on training and education requirements, median salaries, and job satisfaction across a variety of fields, including social services, education, and construction.
The best jobs and highest-paying jobs are available to people who haven’t attended or graduated from college, even without a college degree.

“If you’re thinking of moving in 2025, we’ve also announced the cities with the highest salaries, giving you data and information to help you make important life decisions,” she added.
With technology playing a big role in many jobs, some may wonder if their jobs will be replaced by robots.
“It’s not fortune-telling,” Chase says, but the U.S. news list incorporates indicators such as future outlook, potential wages, employment, job security, stability and work-life balance.
“Some people might say, ‘Hey, software engineer, is that going to go away with the rise of artificial intelligence?'” Chase said. “If you look at the data, the BLS and the government will say, ‘No, it’s going to be one of the fastest growing jobs over the next 10 years.'”
