In one instance, the thief arrived in a Mercedes-Benz.
Video shows the suspect targeting a G-Wagen parked on the lot.
For William Alger and his family, this is case number 11. Alger has turned his home into a technological fortress. Local 10 News first spoke to him about the issue in 2022.
Alarms, lasers and motion cameras have helped him, but scammers are still attacking, and his neighbors are feeling it too. Often they are not so lucky.
“They just want to get what they want,” Alger said. “They’re trying to leave something behind in their car.”
Resident Andrew Castellano said scammers raided his property and pulled over in a Maserati around the same time as Alger.
Someone jumped the fence and immediately targeted the mother’s G-Wagen. She was visiting his wife and his new baby.
“(They) took her purse,” Castellano said. “What are the police doing, what is the city council doing about it?” If I were home at 3:45 on a Thursday, the scenario would take a slightly different turn. ”
He added, “They started adding license plate readers and things like that. But when they pick up license plates, it’s usually stolen license plates.”
Officials say it’s all part of an elaborate criminal ring targeting homes in the Coral Gables, South Miami and Pinecrest areas.
Residents said they plan to go to their elected officials for answers.
