BMW’s Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, like other luxury car brands, has seen an increase in demand for bespoke and complex cars in recent months.
These unique embellishments include commissioned 18-karat solid gold engravings, over 869,500 stitches of intricate embroidery, and holographic paint finishes.
The company said its investment of more than £300m at its Goodwood manufacturing facility in the south of England will help create space for bespoke and coachbuilt projects. The latter refers to an invitation-only program that allows the company’s customers to create “completely original cars.”
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said the investment, likely to be seen as support for Britain’s ruling Labor party, would be the company’s biggest single capital injection since it opened its Goodwood factory 22 years ago.
“Rolls-Royce is a global business,” Chris Brownridge, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Wednesday.
“We have customers in every corner of the world, and the increasing demand for more complex commissions from our customers is something we must meet. Our investment in Goodwood is therefore a strong commitment to the well-being of our organization. “It’s not only a statement of our character, but also a statement of how the organization works. We’re confident in our growth plans,” Brownridge said.
“What we’re trying to do is not make more Rolls-Royces, what we’re trying to do and what we’re going to do is make more special orders and more noteworthy. It’s about building cars,” he added.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced that it sold 5,712 cars last year, down 5% from global sales of 6,032 cars in 2023. The company attributed the slight decrease in sales to a switch to new models.
North America became the company’s largest sales region in 2024, as measured by the number of vehicles delivered to customers.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said that when considering all regions, the most requested models last year were the Cullinan, Specter and Ghost, respectively.
