UAB is ranked No. 164 based on its outstanding academic research portfolio and its overall global and regional reputation.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has achieved a notable milestone by placing in the top 6% of universities in the world in the latest U.S. News & World Report international rankings.
UAB was ranked 164th out of 2,459 schools in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-2025 Best Global Universities rankings, making it the highest-ranked school in Alabama. This ranking surpassed UAB’s previous rankings (top 10 percent in 2021 and top 8 percent in 2022).
UAB’s continued ranking in the top 10 percent of these rankings (an increase of 4 percentage points in four years) is a testament to the world-class research and scholarship being conducted by faculty, staff, and students across campus. It’s telling,” UAB President Ray said. Watts. “As we continue the most successful era of research funding in UAB history and pursue ambitious goals of purposeful growth, our research enterprise will become increasingly competitive and, most importantly, will have an even greater impact on the lives of people, nations, and the world. ”
Out of 297 schools ranked in the U.S., UAB ranks 57th, or in the top 19% of U.S. universities.
UAB ranks among the top 100 in the world in seven areas, all of which are part of the Marnix E. Hersink School of Medicine. The rankings and fields are as follows:

The Best Global Universities methodology is based on data provided by Clarivate and not collected directly from universities by U.S. News. Rankings were calculated using bibliographic indicators such as publications, citations, and most cited papers, rather than data about specific programs.
