Two men were found dead in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue plane in Florida during a routine post-flight inspection, officials said Monday.
Broward County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Carrie Codd said in a news conference Tuesday morning that their identities and the circumstances of their deaths are unknown and remain under investigation.
Paramedics pronounced two people dead after sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Monday around 11:30 p.m., Codd said.
Codd said the Broward County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
JetBlue said in a statement that authorities are investigating how the plane was accessed.
“This is a heartbreaking situation and we are committed to working closely with authorities and supporting their efforts to understand how this happened.”
JetBlue said the plane, flight number 1801, most recently flew from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
A Florida airport spokeswoman said airport operations were not disrupted and passengers had already departed when the bodies were discovered.
