Other than Tesla, GM sold more EVs in the U.S. in 2024 than any other company. GM’s EV sales surged 125% in the fourth quarter due to strong demand for new electric models such as the Chevrolet Equinox and Blazer EV.
GM will surpass rivals with new EVs in 2024
GM sold 43,982 electric vehicles in the U.S. in the last three months of 2024, an increase of 125% from the fourth quarter of 2023. December was the second month in a row that GM’s EV sales exceeded 15,000 units, making it the second automaker to accomplish this feat after Tesla.
New electric models, including the Chevrolet Equinox EV, were a major driver of growth. GM sold an additional 18,089 EV Equinox models in the fourth quarter, bringing the total to 28,874 in 2024.
Deliveries just began in May, and GM said the electric Equinox is already among the top five best-selling EVs in the United States.
Other vehicles such as the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Blazer and Silverado EV also contributed to the sales increase. Another 8,084 Lyriqs were sold in the fourth quarter, and GM sold more than 28,400 total last year. Sales of the Chevrolet Blazer and Silverado EVs are on the rise, with 7,883 and 2,176 units sold in the fourth quarter.
Even the GMC Hummer EV is expected to see more demand. GM sold an additional 5,091 Hummer EVs (SUVs and pickups) in the fourth quarter (up 151% year over year), bringing the total to 13,993 in 2024 (up 331%).
GM has released several new EVs, including the Cadillac Escalade IQ and GMC Sierra EV. In the fourth quarter, 670 Escalade EVs and 1,401 Sierra pickup trucks were sold.
The company said this growth will be enough for GM to become the No. 2 EV seller in the U.S. behind Tesla in the second half of 2024. GM will sell 114,432 EVs in 2024, a 50% increase from 2023. GM’s share of the U.S. EV market nearly doubled throughout 2024, reaching about 12% in the fourth quarter.
Ford today reported that it sold 30,176 EVs in the fourth quarter, a record high and an increase of 16% from the fourth quarter of 2023. In 2024, electric vehicle sales in the U.S. will be 97,865, falling behind GM, which sold more than 114,400 electric vehicles.
GM’s growth came as EV leader Tesla delivered 495,570 vehicles in the fourth quarter, lower than expected. Tesla delivered a total of more than 1.78 million EVs last year, slightly less than the approximately 1.8 million in 2023.
Rory Harvey, GM’s executive vice president and president of global markets, said the sales growth is “because we have something for everyone, no matter their driving preferences.”
GM plans to begin deliveries of two new Cadillac luxury electric SUVs, the three-row Vistiq and the smaller Optiq, in the first quarter of 2025.
