Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also warned that even if Donald Trump “tries to restart bilateral relations, we will have to swim against the tide.”
Russia’s foreign minister has rejected a peace plan put forward by Donald Trump’s team to end the war in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reportedly said the Russian government was appalled to learn that President Trump and his aides are considering pursuing a peace deal that would allow Ukraine to join NATO.
“Of course, we are not satisfied with the proposals made by members of the Trump team.”
“Judging by numerous leaks and President Donald Trump’s interview with Time magazine on December 12, their thinking is that hostilities along the line of contact are not possible,” Foreign Minister Lavrov said at a press conference on Monday, December 30. “We need to stop it and shift the responsibility for the conflict with Russia onto the European side.” , according to the New York Post.
Lavrov added: “Of course, we are not satisfied with the proposals of members of the Trump team to postpone Ukraine’s membership in NATO for 20 years and to station British and European peacekeepers in Ukraine.” .
In an interview with Time magazine, President Trump said he did not want to discuss the official plan for Ukraine because it would be a “worthless plan” if it were made public. But he promised not to abandon Ukraine. Since his landslide election victory, he has reportedly considered delaying Kiev’s entry into NATO while pushing for a European military presence in Ukraine. Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, whom President Trump nominated as special envoy to Ukraine, proposed cutting off aid to Kiev and threatening Russia with a surge in weapons so the two sides could negotiate a peace deal.
Foreign Minister Lavrov said Russia “will refuse to accept Ukraine’s membership in NATO, regardless of territorial factors.” Moscow has long maintained that it launched the 2022 invasion of Ukraine to stop NATO from expanding eastward. Lavrov described this as “active absorption.”
Lavrov also argued that it was up to President Trump to be the first to contact Moscow about the war. He warned the next president that even if he tries to “restart bilateral relations, he will have to swim against the current.”
