Two weeks after leading his alma mater to a state championship, Teddy Bridgewater is returning to the NFL.
On Thursday, the team announced that Bridgewater, 32, has signed to the Detroit Lions’ active roster for the remainder of the season.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said he has been in contact with the veteran quarterback for some time.
“To be able to bring a player back here with experience,” Campbell said. “He’s staying in shape, he’s throwing. It just brings a level of professionalism, a veteran presence, a great player for our team, a great player for the position. It doesn’t mean I’m disappointed. That’s not the point.” That means we can bring back a guy who has played a lot in the NFL. ”
Bridgewater played nine seasons in the NFL with six teams before retiring after last season with the Lions. He was a first-round pick out of Louisville in 2014 and has thrown for 15,120 yards and 75 touchdowns in 79 career games.
Bridgewater then took over the head coaching job at Miami Northwestern, which won the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 3A state title last month, defeating the previously undefeated Jacksonville Rains in 41 games. We defeated them 0-0. The team finished the season with a 12-2 record and outscored opponents 262-12 in five playoff games.
After leading the school to its first state title in 2019, Bridgewater said he’s not done with the NFL. He told Rapoport and Tom Pelissero on NFL Network last month that he was looking forward to playing again.
“That’s the plan,” Bridgewater said. “My team knows that’s the plan. We wanted to win a state championship, so then the coaches go back to the league and see what happens, and then in February in the offseason. I’ll come back and continue coaching high school football. We’ll see how it goes.” “
Bridgewater will join Jared Goff and Hooker in the starting lineup for the 13-2 Lions. Jake Fromm, who is on the practice squad, is the fourth quarterback on the roster.
The Lions conclude the regular season on Monday night in Week 18 against the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings.
