HONOLULU, Hawaii — USF head coach Alex Goresh says what often happens in bowl games is that one team is happy to be there, while the other team is there to win. He said it was true. After a 4,700-mile trip, he hopes his team returns from Honolulu with a win over San Jose St. Louis in the Hawaii Bowl.
“I’m very grateful to the management team, and I’m also very grateful to the administration for allowing us to operate at the highest level, so our staff can feel safe,” Goresh said at a press conference this weekend. We’ll get out of here.” “I think I’m done adjusting for now. Now I have to go to work and prepare like a normal game.”
Tonight will not be a “normal” game for USF receiver Sean Atkins. It will be his last game in a Bulls uniform. The former walk-on rose to become one of the best players in program history. His 189 career receptions are the most in USF history.
“I can’t believe this place is real. I feel like I know where I am in the world,” Atkins joked while talking about his experience traveling to Hawaii. “When I look at myself (on my Snapchat map) and where I am, I’m literally in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I’m just grateful to be here and grateful to my teammates and grateful to be here. I’m really excited. I can appreciate everything from where I started.”
The Bulls’ game week activities included a guided tour of Pearl Harbor and spreading holiday cheer at the local Shriners Hospital for Children. Linebacker Mac Harris said these things add to the formula of improving the entire program.
“We’re building a culture here, we’re building a culture within the locker room. It’s essentially around the program that grows us to where we want to go. The playoffs that coach was talking about. to play in the game,” Harris said. He said he led the team in tackles (74) and sacks (four). “It’s great to be able to play again and bring us together even more.”
“We will have a chance to continue to grow as a soccer team,” Goresh added. “Again, I’m really excited and grateful to be here, and I think our players are too.”
USF (6-6) and San Jose Street (7-5) will kick off Dec. 24 at 8 p.m. on ESPN. The only other matchup between the two schools was won by the Bulls. In 2017, they won 42-22 in San Jose.
