NEW ULM — Madalyn Olson’s first goal of the season and sophomore Greta Bailey’s first varsity goal led to two goals for the New Ulm Eagles in a nonconference girls hockey game Saturday at the New Ulm Civic. They closed out the third period and defeated New Prague 4–0. center.
Maia Hornig and Brecklyn Harazin added goals.
Harazin, an eighth-grader, also added two assists.
Tristin Wallner, Olson, Isabelle Forstner and Breelynn Weston each added help.
Ulm’s new goaltender, Eva Brennan, stopped all 21 Trojan shots in the game, and the Eagles more than doubled New Prague netminder Chloe Huita’s 48 shots.
“This was an important game for us.” Ulm’s new head coach Jeremy Reed said. “We have grown a lot as individuals and as a team. The girls came into this game excited and hit 49 shots on net.”
The Eagles, who have struggled to score this season, took a 1-0 lead at the 3:54 mark with a solo break from Hornig, a backhanded puck from Ouita, and assists from Forstner and Wallner. did.
“The first goal of the game was a great recovery by Isabelle Forstner. She came right back and moved the puck up the rink. It was a beautiful stretch play.” Reid said. “But it started in our defensive zone.”
New Ulm increased its lead to 2-0 just two minutes into the second period when Harazin scored off assists from Olson and Weston.
“Our first goal was big, but after the second goal, the situation on our bench changed.” Reid said. “It was huge to score the first two goals. They were very relaxed.”
New Prague tried to rebuild the game midway through the third period when it went on a power play.
But the Eagles turned the tables on the Trojans with a short goal by Olson at 8:41 to take a 3-0 lead.
“She has the talent to kill penalties.” Reid said “And believe it or not, that was her first goal of the season.”
Reed was happy with his team getting the puck in the net.
“We’ve been focused on putting pucks and bodies on the net.” he said. “And our fourth goal was Greta’s first international goal and that’s what it was. She went to the net and the puck went to the net. She got to the net and was successful.”
New Um, currently 4-8 on the season, will be off until competing in the Sartell Tournament from Dec. 26-28.
The Eagles will play Northern Lights, Richfeed Dazel/Cokato and St. Cloud.
