Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts suffered a concussion in Sunday’s loss to the Washington Commanders.
He was injured on the Eagles’ touchdown drive in the first quarter. After hitting his head on the turf in a tackle, he was slow to stand up and trotted toward the sideline. He was replaced by substitute Kenny Pickett, but did not return. The Eagles ultimately ruled him out.
Pickett completed 3 of 3 driving passes, including a touchdown to AJ Brown, extending Philadelphia’s lead to 14-0. Hurts left the field for the locker room, and the Eagles announced before their next possession that he was being tested for a concussion.
Pickett returned to the field for Philadelphia’s next drive and threw an interception to linebacker Frankie Luv.
Washington scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive, cutting Philadelphia’s lead to 14-7.
Pickett’s touchdown was his first since joining the Eagles in the offseason. Pickett previously started two seasons with the Steelers after being selected by Pittsburgh in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The last time he threw a touchdown was on November 2, 2023, in Week 8.
He then failed to throw a touchdown in four consecutive games and lost his starting spot. The Eagles traded Pickett to back up Hurts in the offseason.
Hurts left the game with the Eagles competing for the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. The Eagles entered Sunday’s game with a 12-2 record, a three-way tie with the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings for the conference’s best record. Hurts, a two-time Pro Bowler, entered Sunday completing 69.2 percent of his passes for 206.6 yards per game, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.
