SARANAC LAKE — The Lake Placid girls basketball team earned its second win of the season, defeating the host Saranac Lake Red Storm 38-27 on Monday night.
The Blue Bombers didn’t have a perfect night, getting off to a shaky start early. However, Abby Wright took control offensively in the second half, and she and the rest of the team put in a strong defensive performance to slip past their non-league rivals and improve the team’s overall grade to 2. . 5.
“The way we played defense tonight was really good.” Lake Placid head coach Jeff Potter said. “(There was) a lot of hustle and bustle and that was causing some turnovers. Ella Moody did a great job defensively, Ellie Shipman did a great job defensively as well. It certainly helps when hitting outside shots.”
Wright led all scorers with 25 points, including seven 3-pointers. Moody and Shipman each scored four points, Anisa Sekjanin added three points and Jonilyn Corrow added two points.
Meanwhile, Emma Akey scored 15 points for the Red Storm, including two 3-pointers. Ashlyn Tomaszewski and Sadie Tower each scored four points, and Briley Carter and Tristan LaDue each scored two points. However, expensive substitutions proved to be a problem for the team.
“There were too many (poor passes) and Lake Placid took advantage of that.” Saranac Lake head coach Ian Breen said. “They executed their offense very well and didn’t turn the ball over. That was the big difference in this game. We turned it over and they didn’t turn it over. ”
The Red Storm took a 13-8 lead early in the first quarter, but the Blue Bombers responded with a 10-5 run to tie the score at 18-18 at halftime.
“We started a little slow and had a lot of turnovers, so we had to work that out.” Potter said. “Once Abby got hot with her 3-point shooting, we got really open inside.”
After intermission, Wright connected on nine points (all 3-pointers) in the third quarter with a basket by Shipman, giving the Blue Bombers a 29-23 advantage going into the final period.
“I told her, ‘You have to take the picture when it’s open.'” Potter said. “And they were crazy about her. It was great to win.”
Thanks to Moody’s four points, Lake Placid defeated Saranac Lake 9-4 in the fourth quarter. Akee and Tomaszewski each had goals in the final period.
The loss drops the Red Storm to 1-5 overall, but Monday’s game clearly wasn’t Breen’s best.
“I think there was an effort, but it just wasn’t our night.” he said. “No shots fell. Lake Placid, credit to them. They played really hard, they played really smart. Credit to them they beat us, but sometimes things like that happen. .”
Saranac Lake’s next game is today at home against the Au Sable Valley Patriots at 7 p.m. This will be one of the team’s first league games of the season.
“We definitely have to use this as a learning experience because we are now going into league play and we have some tough games ahead of us.” Breen said. “So we have to play better to compete. We can’t play like we did tonight and play against the best team in Game 7. We’re going to work on it and improve every day.” I will try my best to do so.”
Meanwhile, the Blue Bombers host Johnsburg/Minerva on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The team was originally scheduled to travel to Wells on Tuesday, but that game was postponed.
