The United South Central Rebels men’s basketball team led the Maple River Eagles for most of the game, but ultimately lost 54-48.
The game took place in Mapleton on Tuesday night, December 10th.
The Eagles went on a 15-0 run to take a 45-38 lead with five minutes left in the game. The Rebels’ lead was cut to three points, but Maple River made some good shots from the free throw line to secure the victory.
“We led by 11 points in the second half.” Coach Adam Walker said. “But we couldn’t force the home Eagles on the road late in the game.”
USC had three players in double-digit hits in the scoring column. Zyden Schott scored 14 points, and Aiden Crabtree and Dylan Bonsack each scored 10 points.
Dylan Stevens and Wyatt Sparks each had seven points. Sparks led the team with six rebounds, while Crabtree, Stevens and Bonsack each had five rebounds.
As a team, the Rebels were just 5-of-22 (23%) on 2-point attempts, but 8-of-21 (38%) on 3-point attempts. He was 14-of-21 from the free-throw line, a 67 percent success rate.
The Eagles were 14 of 34 from inside the arc (41%) and 3 of 15 from beyond the arc (20%). They made 81 percent of their free throws, 17 of 21.
USC had 28 rebounds to Maple River’s 30 rebounds, eight assists to 10 rebounds, six steals to seven steals, four blocks to one and 16 rebounds to 12 turnovers.
The Rebels’ next game was a home game against Triton on Friday, December 13th.
This week they will face Cleveland on Monday, December 16th, and New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Thursday, December 19th.
USC 50, FBA 45
The United South Central Rebels boys basketball team took a halftime lead and then hung on to defeat the Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals 50-45 on Friday, Dec. 6.
The Rebels led 28-21 at the end of the first half, but the Cardinals came back in the second half and outscored them 24-22.
USC was led by Dylan Bonsack, who scored 14 points in the game.
Wyatt Sparks added eight points and was tied for the team lead in rebounds with Dylan Stevens, who each had nine grabs.
Zyden Schott scored seven points and Aiden Crabtree and Jaden Vernick each added six points for the Rebels.
The Rebels led by seven points in the first half and quickly scored on a bucket from the Sparks in the second half to take their largest lead to nine points. Bernick then ignited a team that came off the bench due to an injury to C.J. Shuman, scoring six points inside. Bonsack’s 3-pointer and two clutch late free throws from Schott helped seal the Gopher Conference’s five-point road win.
As a team, the Rebels shot 30 percent from inside the arc and made 16 of 31 2-pointers. He made just 3 of 17 from behind the arc, or 18%. They made exactly half of their free throw attempts, 9 of 18.
The FBA Cardinals were 10-of-35 (29 percent) from 2-point range, 6-of-23 (26 percent) from 3-point range and 7-of-14 (50 percent) from free throws.
“This match was sloppy from start to finish, but I was able to close it out even though I didn’t play my best, so I’m very happy.” Coach Adam Walker said. “Shooting was an issue for both teams, but we needed a great run to end the first half.”
The Rebels had 27 rebounds, while the Cards had 41. USC had 13 assists to FBA’s 10, 12 turnovers to 13, two blocks to six, and both teams had nine steals.
