Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss said Friday that he is undergoing treatment for cancer and recovering from major surgery.
Moss appeared on Instagram Live, using a cane, to introduce herself as a cancer survivor and thank her “prayer warriors” for their support.
Mr Moss said a cancerous mass was found in the bile duct between the pancreas and liver. He said he had surgery on Thanksgiving to have a stent placed in his liver, and about a week ago he underwent a six-hour surgery to remove cancer. He said he was hospitalized for six days and was discharged on Friday.
Moss said the surgery was a Whipple procedure. The surgery involves removing the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine, the gallbladder, and the bile duct, according to the Mayo Clinic.
“As healthy as I thought I was, I never thought I would be in this situation,” Moss said.
Moss said he will undergo radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
“Every prayer, every well-wishes, that’s how I and my family felt,” Moss said, wearing a hoodie that read “Team Moss.”
Moss retired from his role as an analyst on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” on Dec. 6.
“As soon as I’m healthy enough to be back with everyone, I’ll be on set. …I hope to be back with you all soon,” Moss said.
“My goal is to get back on TV with my team.”
Mr Moss, wearing a gray hoodie with the words ‘Team Moss’ written on it, appealed for donations on his website and said the funds would primarily go towards cancer research.
Moss, 47, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018 after playing 14 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (1998-2004, 2010), Oakland Raiders (2005-06), New England Patriots (2007-10) and Tennessee. fulfilled. Titans (2010) and San Francisco 49ers (2012).
Moss ranks second in NFL history with 156 touchdown catches and set an NFL record with 23 TD receptions with the Patriots in 2007.
This story has been corrected. A previous version incorrectly reported that the cancer was outside Moss’ intestinal tract.
