UCSF Medical Center is rated among the best for obstetric care by U.S. News & World Report.
This assessment is designed to help expectant parents identify the best hospital for an uncomplicated pregnancy. The study evaluated 817 hospitals across the United States, and UCSF Medical Center was rated “high performing.”
This rating reflects the hospital’s commitment to high standards and a clinical care team with a wide range of expertise. UCSF Health’s maternal care team includes nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, generalists, hospitalists, obstetricians, anesthesiologists, and maternal-fetal health care providers.
“We will maximize interdisciplinary collaboration,” said Dr. Nagma Farooqi, medical director of the UCSF Birthing Center. “Our healthcare professionals share common goals of safety, equity and excellence and work with each patient through ongoing communication and multiple daily huddles.”
UCSF Medical Center performed well on a wide range of indicators of excellence in obstetric care. These include:
Minimize avoidable caesarean sections and increase the rate of vaginal births after caesarean sections. Minimize the use of episiotomy, which is an incision made into the vagina during childbirth. These are only recommended for specific clinical situations. Breastfeeding infants: At UCSF Health, 82.3% were breastfed, compared to 57.6% in Western countries and 49% nationally. Breast milk promotes brain development and the immune system, and may protect against allergies and asthma. Track and report racial/ethnic disparities.
Farooqi said UCSF Health is a leader in areas such as breech births, avoiding unnecessary C-sections and low surgical infection rates. UCSF Birth Center also takes pride in innovative programs such as EMBRACE, which provides a model of care that addresses high maternal and infant mortality rates among Black families.
“We are proud of our staff and the obstetric care we provide,” said Dr. Juan González Vélez, chair of UCSF’s obstetrics department and chief of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He added that the team strives to provide fair and equitable patient-centered care, cutting-edge research, and training for the next generation of leaders.
