Georgia quarterback Carson Beck injured his elbow in the No. 2 Bulldogs’ 22-19 win over Texas in the SEC Championship Game as the team prepares for the College Football Playoff. The school announced Monday that it is investigating treatment options. Beck was injured during the final play of the first half when a Texas defender grabbed his arm as he attempted to throw downfield. There are no plans for Beck to return at this time.
Beck did not return to the game and was seen being consoled on the sideline. Backup gunner Stockton came on as a reliever and helped the Bulldogs defeat Texas in overtime.
Additionally, Georgia announced that star punter Brett Thorson injured his knee during the game and will miss the remainder of the season. Thorson is considered one of the best punters in college football, averaging over 50 yards per punt against Texas.
“Carson and Brett are both fierce competitors and extremely hard workers,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said in a statement. “I am confident they will approach their rehabilitation with the same determination they show in their daily lives. We will be here to support them every step of the way.”
During a frustrating senior season after choosing to return to school, Beck completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 3,485 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. However, he improved late in the season, scoring 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions over the final four games, leading the Bulldogs back into CFP contention.
The Bulldogs will likely rely on Stockton for the CFP. The sophomore completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards and one interception off the bench, throwing 51 pass attempts in his career as a backup.
Georgia entered the College Football Playoff as the No. 2 overall seed and received a bye in the first round. The Bulldogs will play the winner of No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 10 Indiana in the Sugar Bowl.
