Despite losing 44-42 to the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen can take his hat off to one thing.
Make history.
The 28-year-old accomplished something no other NFL player has ever done, becoming the first player to have three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns in a single game.
In the Bills’ first loss in more than two months, Allen threw for 342 yards, including TD strikes of 41, 51 and 21 yards, and rushed for 82 yards, including three 1-yard TD runs. His last appearance was on October 6th against the Houston Texans.
The seventh-year pro led the Bills to a remarkable comeback in the fourth quarter, trailing 38-21.
Allen destroyed the Rams’ defense on the ground and through the air, making the game 38-35 with just over eight minutes left.
But Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who finished with 320 yards passing, found himself in this situation multiple times, orchestrating a nearly seven-minute drive and a 19-yard touchdown throw to wide receiver Puka Nacua. It reached its climax and extended LA’s lead. I missed the extra point and it was 44-35.
However, Allen and his friends had no intention of overthrowing without a fight.
After Los Angeles’ kickoff, the two-time Pro Bowler led a 54-second drive that ended with Allen’s third rushing touchdown of the game, making it 44-42.
However, the Rams recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock, giving Los Angeles its first win over Buffalo since 2012.
Both teams put on an offensive masterclass, combining for 86 points, 902 yards, and 12 touchdowns.
After the game, a disappointed Allen told reporters that it was “a total loss for my team in all three phases,” but that it all started with him.
“I hate losing,” Allen said. “It doesn’t matter if you lose by two points or if you lose by 100 points, you’re still losing.Offensively we had to find a way to score before the first half and score after the second half. We couldn’t do our part.”
Allen’s historic day didn’t result in a win, but his performance may have pleased fantasy football players.
His 51.88 fantasy points are the highest by a quarterback since at least 1950, according to NFL Fantasy Football.
The loss dropped the Bills to 10-3, but they had already clinched the AFC East title following last week’s win over the San Francisco 49ers in the snow.
The Bills will take on the NFC-leading Lions next week in Detroit.
