Cucumbers sold by Sunfed Produce at retailers nationwide including Costco and Walmart are being recalled because they may be linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can be fatal if ingested by certain populations. Cucumbers were sold in 26 provinces and five provinces in Canada. So far, the outbreak has resulted in 68 people becoming ill and 18 hospitalized.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have both issued notices regarding cucumber recalls. Although the cucumbers are no longer available for purchase, authorities are urging consumers who may have cucumbers at home not to eat them.
“Sanfed is pleased to inform you that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has notified Sanfed that the cucumbers described above are associated with salmonellosis illnesses reported between October 12, 2024 and November 15, 2024. In response, this recall was initiated. ” the company said in a press release. is also contacting each direct purchaser to notify them of the recall. Farmed cucumbers sold at Costco and further recalled
The FDA announced that Sunfed Produce is recalling all sizes of U.S.-grown raw whole cucumbers sold between October 12, 2024 and November 26, 2024.
The recalled products were packaged as follows:
A large amount of cardboard containers with “SunFed” labels affixed to them. A black plastic box with a sticker showing the name of the grower involved: “Agrotato, SA de CV”
According to the CDC, products may have a sticker labeled “Sunfed Mexico.” Photos of the recalled cucumber labels are available on the FDA’s website.
SunFederal President Craig Slate said in an FDA press release: We are working closely with authorities and the ranch involved to determine the possible cause. ”
Slate added that the company requires all producers to “strictly follow” FDA food safety requirements.
The FDA urges people who purchased cucumbers to discard them immediately and “also encourages them to clean and disinfect any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products to reduce cross-contamination.” added.

The cucumbers were also shipped to the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Ontario, the FDA said.
According to the CDC, cases of salmonella infections associated with the recalled cucumbers have been reported in the following states:

Salmonella symptoms
Salmonella is present in the intestines of humans and animals, according to the Mayo Clinic. People can become infected with salmonella through contaminated food or water. The FDA notes that symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain “typically begin 6 hours to 6 days after infection and last 4 to 7 days.”
The agency advised anyone who believes they have eaten cucumbers to feel sick to call SanFed’s Recall Hotline at (888) 542-5849 and to contact their health care provider immediately.
Costco announced a cucumber recall at the same time as an egg recall due to possible Salmonella contamination. This also follows carrot recalls due to possible E. coli contamination involving retailers Costco, Target, Trader Joe’s, and Costco.
