National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday that the United States is not considering returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine, which it abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Sullivan was asked about a New York Times article last month in which some unnamed Western officials suggested that U.S. President Joe Biden might provide arms to Ukraine before leaving office. made a statement.
“That is not on the table, no. What we are doing is pushing a range of conventional capabilities into Ukraine so that Ukraine can effectively defend itself and fight Russia, and nuclear capabilities. It’s not about (giving),” he told the ABC.
Russia said last week that the idea was “utter madness” and that preventing such a scenario was one of the reasons it sent troops to Ukraine.
Kiev inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union after its collapse in 1991, but gave them up under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum in exchange for security guarantees from Russia, the United States and Britain.
