VESTAL – Climber/Sherman/Panama and Dolgeville were the top-ranked Class D teams in the state entering Friday.
As it turns out, the gap between them is quite large.
Tate Catanese scored four touchdowns and No. 1 Climber Sherman led 36-0 at halftime in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association West semifinals at Vestal High School. defeated the second-place Blue Devils 43-14. school.
The Wolfpack’s next game is the title game against Division IX Burke Catholic next Friday at 3 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome on the Syracuse University campus. The Eagles defeated Greenwich 25-18 in overtime in the East semifinals on Friday at Middletown High School.
If the Climbers/Shermans/Panamas play as well as they did in the first 24 minutes at Dick Hoover Stadium, it’s hard to imagine Burke Catholic being a big test.
The Wolfpack took less than three minutes to score their first touchdown on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Catanese to Bryce Hinsdale, then Catanese connected with Carter Brink for a 23-yard touchdown. It took just over two minutes to add up the second score. 2:45 left in the first quarter. Two point kicks made it 14-0.

With 1 minute 20 seconds left in the second quarter, he scored his own score on a 4th down screen pass.
All that remained in the second half was whether Hinsdale would chase the state’s all-time receiving record. Hinsdale, who entered Game 7 off Bruce Williams’ 227 points, caught four passes in the first half.
After D’Orgeville turned the ball over on downs to start the third quarter, Catanese immediately targeted Hinsdale on a Wolfpack drive. On first-and-10 and second-and-5, the pair led to Hinsdale’s 225th and 226th catches. After Owens ran for 11 yards, Hinsdale tied the record with a 6-yard catch on a screen pass.
Hinsdale then set a new record by running 6 yards to the Dolgeville sideline on a second-and-4 from the 50-yard line with 3:47 left in the third quarter.
Two plays later, Catanese hooked up with Hinsdale for a 9-yard gain on his 229th reception.
