This year’s international feature race poses “big questions for the Academy,” according to Screen International’s awards experts.
In our second Screen Awards podcast for the 2024/25 race, Screen’s editor-in-chief Matt Muller, executive editor, reviews and newcomer Fionnuala Harrigan, and awards and box office editor Charles Gantt discuss Ampus’ international We will evaluate the titles that participate in the special feature. Muller said some of the strong candidates include “Emilia Perez,” a Spanish-language musical chosen by France, and “Santosh,” a Hindi drama set in rural India submitted to Britain. It said it included films “representative of countries that do not reflect their own cultures and experiences.” and The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, produced and set in Iran, with director Mohammad Rasulov representing Germany after he was forced to flee his home country.
“Of course Iran would never nominate a film like this,” Harrigan says. ): Is it fair or equal?
The trio will also be among other titles from around the world that will be included in Ampas’ 15-strong international feature film shortlist, to be announced on December 17th, as well as a BAFTA best picture outside the English category. I’m also paying attention to the title.
