NPR’s Justin Merriman
On a Sunday in mid-July, Pastor Chris Morgan welcomed the congregation at Christ United Methodist Church in suburban Pittsburgh with a simple message.
That Sunday was especially difficult.
The day before, a man nearly assassinated then-candidate Donald Trump 40 miles north in Butler. Morgan called on people to pray for Trump and those killed and injured in the shooting, and asked the congregation to pray for the shooter’s family.
Morgan had already planned a series of sermons titled “Do Unto Others” to address political divisions in the country and his congregation ahead of Election Day.
NPR’s Frank Langfitt visited Christchurch the weekend before and after Election Day to see if efforts there had made a difference.
As Americans prepare to come together for Thanksgiving, how can – and can – bridge the country’s political divide?
