South Africa-based HK Studio was responsible for the project and purposefully designed the entire villa in a way that minimizes visual, acoustic and physical barriers between guests and the bush.
“Milele’s design pillars are integral to the architectural structure,” says Megan Hesse, co-owner of HK Studio. “Minimizing the barriers between guests and the safari experience has always been essential to Mirele’s design. Many of the design cues are borrowed from the lodge’s neighboring landscape, helping to imbue the space with a homely yet expansive feel. Earth tones are combined with gentle grassy tones such as yellows, prints, greens and greys, and natural textures are paramount, designed not to block or draw back the view. Grass-woven wallpaper in all main rooms gives the impression of being immersed in a savannah grassland. Particularly at sunrise and sunset, the light refracts and reflects off the walls, creating a perfect geometric silhouette soirée. The effect is a symbiotic relationship between Mother Nature and design, giving each carefully selected room of the villa a 360-degree sense of immersion.
Furniture is designed by Anatomy and sourced from across Africa. Laurie Wid designed a cork-top chair in the crowded American style. This includes a rare, specially commissioned color portrait by artist Trevor Steurman. Interior and exterior effects extend the traditional game drive experience with ambient power and aesthetics.
