The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s hush money criminal trial has postponed his sentencing, which was scheduled for next week.
Judge Juan Melchan also agreed to hold off on announcing his decision on presidential immunity until he reviewed the parties’ submissions.
Marchand granted Trump’s request for a motion to dismiss the case, ordered the defense team to submit documents by December 2, and gave prosecutors a week to respond. Trump’s team had hoped to submit documents by December 20th.
The judge did not set a new sentencing date or make any further comment on the delay. Trump’s press secretary, Stephen Chan, said Mee Chan’s decision was a “decisive victory” for the president-elect.
Trump’s legal and political fortunes took a sudden turn a year after he faced four separate indictments. While Trump’s two federal lawsuits are winding down in light of his election victory earlier this month, the Georgia case has long been dormant and the New York case is expected to end indefinitely without a verdict.
