Lawyers for X Corporation, the company Elon Musk formed to buy Twitter, filed a notice of appearance Thursday in the bankruptcy case of Alex Jones and his Infowars platform.
The new owners of satirical news site The Onion, along with the families of Sandy Hook massacre victims, had been declared successful bidders for Jones’ controversial platform.
But a Texas bankruptcy judge hearing the case this week expressed concerns about the transparency of the auction process and called for a new hearing to discuss these potential issues.
“No one should be satisfied with the outcome of the auction,” Judge Christopher M. Lopez said, as reported by Bloomberg News.
Company X’s Nov. 14 filing, first reported by Mother Jones, specifies the rights it has as an interested party and requests that it provide all relevant documents in the case. The purpose of Company X’s appearance in court was not disclosed.
X’s attorney listed in the filing did not respond to a request for comment. A lawyer representing The Onion also did not respond to a request for comment.
Both Musk and Jones are known allies of President-elect Donald Trump. With Infowars’ fate up in the air, Musk has allowed Infowars to broadcast on X.
Mr. Jones has used Infowars as a platform to promote conspiracy theories, far-right ideology, and misinformation. He focuses on events and social issues and often sells related products such as supplements and survival gear.
Jones’ bankruptcy means he must pay $1.5 billion in damages to the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, who filed a defamation suit over his false claims that the massacre was a hoax. It originates from. He aired conspiracy theories on his platform, which led to years of harassment and threats against grieving families.
In a statement on He claimed that the claim that the matter had been overturned was false, but did not explain the other points. They deemed this claim “bizarre”.
“We look forward to completing this process before the next scheduled court date,” Collins wrote Saturday.
Representatives for Infowars did not respond to requests for comment.
