STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On Wednesday’s talk show “The View,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg celebrated her 69th birthday, but when the party turned to dessert, she went anonymous because of her political views. I guessed that the bakery had turned down the pastry order.
According to multiple news outlets, the bakery is Holterman’s, located at 405 Arthur Kill Road in Staten Island. We’re more than just a bakery. Founded in 1878, Holterman’s is New York State’s oldest bakery.
At the end of a recent broadcast, Mr. Goldberg’s anger was directed at the dessert’s creator. On “The View,” Whoopi was going through a list of her favorite products to celebrate. However, at the end of the show, the comedienne expressed that one establishment behind these favorites had refused to order her birthday party, citing her political views.
The birthday girl’s comments were made about Charlotte Ruth, an old-fashioned candy widely known as the one from Holterman’s Bakery of Great Kills. Its distinctive packaging, a white paper push-up cup with tiny pink polka dots, is a specific detail that has garnered extensive information from food sleuths, and was first officially published by Entertainment Weekly. It was something.
Third-generation business owner Jill Holterman told customers Thursday morning while working at the counter that she learned about the derogatory term in “The View” through a reporter for an online magazine.
Halterman explained to patrons: The boiler was down at the time, and at the moment we have no choice but to let people refer to the news and understand more about it. ”
On Thursday morning, Halterman told patrons at the store that her small business has been inundated with calls all day. In between working the counter and taking orders, she quietly added to one caller: That’s all I want to do. ”
How did it all start?
As news accounts detail the uproar, Holterman received a call at his home two weeks ago from someone from “The View.” At the moment Jill Holterman heard the order, she couldn’t predict what the appointment would be because the store’s old boiler was malfunctioning.
According to reports, program executives specifically asked Halterman to include Charlotte Russe on the Nov. 6 and Nov. 13 broadcasts on ABC. Halterman told the outlet that the woman finally showed up at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, to pick up 50 of the bread’s signature Charlotte Ruths.
Entertainment Weekly said, “Owner Jill Halterman confirmed that Goldberg originally requested the dessert two weeks in advance, and any insinuations that she was unable to complete the order are to Goldberg’s left. He denied that it was a comment on politics.”
“I do not know what affiliation the woman who received the dessert on Wednesday morning had with respect to ‘The View’ or otherwise,” Halterman told reporters.
The report also said Halterman sometimes denies long-distance requests because he acknowledges there are equipment blips in the 100-year-old building.
There is a clear connection between Goldberg and Staten Island. She was a guest speaker at the 2008 Staten Island Advance Women of Achievement held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bloomfield.
Halterman’s is located at 405 Arthur Kill Rd. in Great Kills. Open daily from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Another local favorite is donuts. This is a specialty that is only available on Sundays for connoisseurs of Holtermann. It’s also known for its crumb cake, which was a beer collaboration with Tompkinsville’s Flagship Brewing Company four years ago.
