A fire in a high-rise building sent thick black smoke into the Manhattan skyline on Thursday, November 14th. The FDNY told the Strauss News that the fire started in a 44-story building known as The Set. Around 11:30 a.m., it took about 40 minutes to subside. Of the 78 firefighters who responded to the scene, one firefighter sustained minor injuries.
Videos on social media captured the alarming amount of smoke from the fire, which appears to have started on one of the top floors. The FDNY is currently investigating what caused the incident, but a building spokesperson told reporters it was a mechanical failure. The article quickly spread around the world and was published in the Toronto Star, the London Independent, and the Daily Mirror.
Politicians quickly reassured residents that disaster had been averted. City Councilman Eric Bottcher posted footage of the incident on social media, along with an update from Hudson Yards management. “Early today, smoke conditions occurred at 455 10th Avenue. The situation is fully contained and there are no injuries. FDNY has declared an ‘all clear’ and is leaving the scene.”
Offering both furnished and unfurnished options, the set is very stylish. “Whether at home or on base, The Set blurs the lines between a five-star hotel and a luxury residential experience,” the website says. Rent for an unfurnished studio there is $4,570. There’s also The Set Club, with facilities such as a pool, study, office and terrace with barbecue pods.
