Eight elementary schools and nine middle schools on New York’s Long Island are in the top 50 in their respective categories, according to new rankings from U.S. News & World Report.
Lakeville Elementary School in Great Neck was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in September, the highest ranking on the island and 13th out of about 4,000 elementary schools statewide, according to the news magazine. The rankings were announced on Thursday.
Great Neck Schools Superintendent Kenneth R. Bossert said in a statement: “Great Neck Schools has a long history of academic excellence, and these rankings affirm our entire school community’s commitment to providing the best programs for all students. It reflects our efforts.”
Also high on the list is Jeffrey Ratner Robert Seaman Elementary School in Jericho, ranking 19th overall in the state. Two other elementary schools in Jericho, George A. Jackson and Cantigue, also made the top 50 at 26th and 43rd place, respectively.
Jericho Schools Superintendent Henry Grishman said, “This is a testament to the dedication of our students and staff to their education and to achieving good grades.” “Our teaching staff always go above and beyond to ensure children progress, learn and achieve.”
In the news magazine’s ranking of approximately 2,900 middle schools across the state, Jericho Middle School topped Long Island at No. 19.
Manhasset Middle School follows in 28th place. Great Neck South ranked 29th, Willets Road School in Roslyn Heights ranked 31st and H.B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset ranked 36th.
Also in the top 50 is North Shore Middle School in Glen Head, which ranks 37th. Helix Middle School, Albertson, 39 years old. and South Woods Middle School, Syosset, 46 years old.
All of the schools on Long Island’s Top 50 list are in Nassau, with the exception of Paul J. Gelinas Middle School in East Setauket, which ranks 49th among middle schools. The school is located in the Mimura district.
Three Villages Schools Superintendent Kevin Scanlon said in a statement that the district is “very proud of this recognition,” and that the ranking “recognizes the hard work of our administration, staff, parents, and students. He acknowledged that it was the result of a lot of dedication.
Among elementary schools, East Williston’s Northside School ranks 29th in the state, a significant jump from last year’s 96th place.
Denton Avenue School in the Helix District is ranked 38th. West Side School in Syosset is No. 47 and Center Street School in Williston Park is No. 49.
According to the rankings, the highest-ranking elementary and middle schools in the entire state are in New York City. The top-ranked elementary school in the state is PS 172 Beacon School of Excellence in Brooklyn, and the top-ranked middle school is Anderson School in Manhattan.
According to a news release from U.S. News & World Report, the ranking methodology is based on “assessing the status of students who are proficient or above in math and reading/language arts, taking into account the student’s background and performance in core subjects.” . Student-teacher ratios will be applied to break up ties in the overall score, the organization noted.
“This data empowers families and communities to advocate for their children’s education,” Lamont Jones, U.S. News’ education editor, said in a news release. “Research continues to show that how students perform academically at these early grade levels is a major factor in their success in high school and beyond.”
In April, U.S. News & World Report released its annual list of top high schools on Long Island, with Jericho leading the way.
