ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter thinks Daniel Jones’ era is probably over for the New York Giants.
“I don’t think we’ll see Daniel Jones play down again for the Giants. That’s my guess at this point,” Schefter said Tuesday.
“Because Brian Daboll’s tone yesterday was different than any other week. It was always, ‘Daniel Jones is our starter, Daniel Jones is our starter, Daniel Jones is our starter.’ Yesterday it was “We are evaluating everything.”
On Sunday, Jones rushed for one touchdown and threw two interceptions as the Giants fell 8-2 in overtime to the Carolina Panthers in Munich.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Daboll on Monday stopped saying Jones was still the starting QB after the loss, instead saying the Giants are “evaluating the situation” for a Week 11 bye. ” he answered.
“We’re going to spend a lot of time here looking at tape and evaluating things,” Daboll said on Monday’s Zoom call (h/t Michael Eisen of Giants.com). Come here next week. ”
Asked if he was considering changing quarterbacks, Daboll said, “I think what we need to do is evaluate the team during the bye week.”
Jones has thrown eight touchdown passes and been picked off seven times through 10 games. He ranks 27th in the NFL with an ESPN Adjusted Total QB Ranking of 46.3.
He struggled with his passing accuracy in the first half on Sunday, completing 6 of 14 for 54 yards.
The Giants came within touchdown range late in the first half, but one of Jones’ passes bounced off the helmet of outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, ending the drive with the Panthers retaining possession.
The Giants had another red zone opportunity with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers held a slim three-point advantage. This time, Jones was unable to connect with running back Tyrone Tracy.
“I think you just have to execute in key situations,” Jones said after the game, according to team records. “I think today’s turnovers cost us our lives. There were other factors that held us back in other close games, so we have to look at where we’re lacking. That’s what we did consistently. I don’t know if it’s one thing.”
The Giants will return to action on Sunday, November 24th for a home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Jones is benched by then, Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito will likely play under center in his place. Eisen noted that because the Giants are in their bye week, there likely won’t be any quarterback news until the team returns from vacation on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
According to Spotrac, Jones is in the second year of a four-year, $160 million contract with the Giants and could leave at the end of this season. If the Giants plan to exercise his outing, the team could be wary of starting Jones going forward because of his injury clause, which guarantees him $23 million in the event of an injury for next season.
