Broncos assistant head coach Mike Westhoff has resigned. Westhoff, a cancer survivor, cited health concerns as the reason for his resignation.
Specifically, Westhoff will be monitoring health issues that came to light last week.
“This decision was not easy to make, but it was a wake-up call. I needed to put my health first.” Westhoff said, via NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero. “This team is heading in the very right direction with a strong foundation and a winning culture. We thank Sean for the opportunity to contribute to a first-class organization and wish the Broncos the best of luck.”
Westhoff is a former special teams coordinator. The Broncos’ special teams are currently run by coordinator Ben Kotwica and assistant Chris Banjo.
Dating back to 1974 and after various college football activities, Westhoff entered the NFL in 1986, joining the Dolphins. He remained there until 2000. He worked for the Jets from 2001 to 2012. He retired at that point, returning in 2017 to work with current Broncos coach Sean Payton and the Saints. He stayed until 2018 and joined Payton in Denver last year.
Some may think this move has something to do with the blocked field goal that cost the Broncos a win against Kansas City on Sunday. As one source familiar with the situation explained, Westhoff will resign even if Will Lutz’s field goal attempt in the final seconds of the loss to the Chiefs is not blocked. . In fact, Kotuka and Banjo will remain as Denver’s special teams coaches.
