Bruins anthem singer Todd Angilly missed out on his “first foray” into politics, but says he is strongly considering running for office to promote community development and transparency. Ta.
Angilly, 49, of Linfield, was unsuccessful in her bid for Essex County Clerk of Court. Mr. Angilly lost to incumbent Democrat Thomas Driscoll, who had held the position since 2001. Mr. Anguilly ran without registration.
Asked about his future political ambitions, Anguilly told the Herald Friday: “I don’t want to answer this as a politician, but I think I’ll try again.” “I don’t know if I’m suitable for the position because I’ve studied the political landscape.”
Angilly, who has been singing the national anthem at Bruins games at TD Garden since 2019, has become a beloved face in Boston sports for his powerful singing and passion for serving the community.
But Angilly said he had no intention of seeking support from the Bruins during his initial political career.
Rather, he drew on his 12 years of experience as a probation officer, half of which was spent in Essex Superior Court in Salem, where the county court clerk works. He currently serves as the director of workforce development for the state Department of Public Safety.
“I knew people would recognize me,” Anguilly said. “I’ve been singing for the Bruins for a few years now, so I thought I’d give politics a try.”
If elected, Mr. Angilly would oversee the administration of Essex County’s Superior Courts, including courthouses in Salem, Lawrence and Newburyport. Its duties would have ranged from supervising civil and criminal bureau personnel to custodian of public and private records.
The salary for this position is $174,532, according to the Salem News.
Mr. Angilly will serve as a point of contact for the community by letting the public know that the courthouse is open to the public and by exposing opportunities within the courthouse to people other than judges and lawyers, such as victim-witness advocates and substance abuse counselors. He said he was looking forward to it.
The national anthem singer, who took over the role from the legendary René Rancourt, also emphasized how he can be transparent if he doesn’t know how taxpayers’ money is being spent.
This is Driscoll’s fifth six-year term.
“No matter where I campaigned in Essex County, two questions always arose: What does the Clerk of Court do? And the other: Who is the Clerk of Court? It was. ” Anguilly said.
“The community is lacking,” he added. “Court clerks earn high salaries, but Essex County residents know very little about who they are, which I thought needed to be improved.”
