Our top sheet bedding discussion may be something you’ve never thought of before.
Top sheet or no top sheet? It turns out that people have strong opinions. Our team participated in the discussion regarding top sheet bedding. This is how we sleep…
Before we get into the discussion, what is a “top sheet”?
The top sheet, also called a flat sheet, is the fabric that is placed underneath. It is placed directly above the fitted sheet on the bed and underneath the blanket, quilt, duvet, and/or comforter to provide a barrier between other layers of bedding.
Here’s what our team said about having a top sheet:
Top sheet 👍 vs. no top sheet 👎
“Yes! I always use a top sheet! It’s great for me not to have this because I feel like I can keep the comforter and duvet cover clean if my body is not in full contact with the comforter.” It seems gross. If I didn’t use the top sheet, I would feel pressured to wash the comforter every week.” – Bryn
“Team top sheet! I love the soft feel of the Quince topsheet. In fact, I just pull up the top sheet, fold it over the comforter, and go into the comforter. It feels great!” – Lina
“I completely agree with Bryn! ‘Icky’ is definitely the word and the fact that our mother taught us that, it’s just a habit. However, my husband doesn’t like top sheets, so the combination of half top sheet, half kick and bottom top sheet is interesting! ” – Chelsea
“Team top sheet all the time! 🙌🏼 There’s no way I’m going to sleep with just a comforter on me – no! 😆 I need smooth, cozy, perfectly tucked sheets. Meanwhile, what about my husband? He does karate while he sleeps. Kick it around like you’re doing it and leave it wrinkled at the bottom of the bed. And let’s just say I’m a little annoyed by this 🙄 Some people don’t understand the artistry of tightly folded sheets.” – Colin.
“We keep things traditional here: mattress pads, fitted sheets, top sheets, soft blankets, and duvets. It has to be super comfortable to get any kind of sleep. Plus, it has to be very comfortable. The weather in the state is so unpredictable that I use just the top sheet at first, then pull up the soft blanket about halfway through the night, and by morning I’m also wearing the duvet.” – Jessica
“I love the crisp, cool feel of cotton sheets. And washing my comforter is such a hassle. Without the topsheet, I feel like I have to wash my comforter as often as my sheets. I do, but I’m not interested in that.” – Jenna R.
“I don’t mind washing my sheets often, but without the top sheet layer, I feel like I need to wash my comforter every time I wash my sheets. Also (and I know this may be biased), Chilling just the top sheet in the linen closet separated from the bottom sheet and the entire pillow case would drive me crazy 😆“ – Emily.
“Yes, I use a top sheet. I like the smooth feel of the sheets more than the seams on a quilt or comforter.” – Kelly
“Top sheet every time! To be honest, I didn’t think there were any other options since it was a set. It would be a waste not to use it! However, I have hot nights all year round (I use a fan every night, both summer and winter), so it’s impossible for me to use a comforter even in winter. ” – Dennis
“Team top sheets are here too! Just having one bed makes it even more comfortable. Plus, as others have mentioned, I no longer have to wash the comforter every time I wash the sheets.” – Kara
“I feel like I need a topsheet to give the cover a cool, smooth feel. It feels wrong to leave it alone.” – Amber
“Team top sheet too! Cool sheets are the best when sleeping. ” – Liza
“Definitely a team top sheet!!! Perfect for when it’s too hot to use a futon and makes the bed feel light and crunchy. My hubs also likes to wrap it all over his legs, so this is We say it’s a must have (we often fight about sheets in the middle of the night 😂)! Also, having the right sheets makes sleeping even more luxurious.” – Allie
No top sheet 👍 vs. top sheet 👎
“I don’t use top sheets, but it’s not because I’m fervently against top sheets; I just find that they aren’t worth the hassle.” I found it easier to just skip one. However, I think I would reconsider if I had invested in a great sheet. I hear you!” – Melinda
“Personally, I use a top sheet because I grew up with my children, but as my teenage sons grew up, I stopped putting a top sheet on the bed. The day after I wash and remake them, they end up literally at the bottom of the bed, so one day I realized that skipping them completely would be less stressful for them to see them all over the bed. Easy to make and no more arguments!” – Sarah
Yes, most of our team believes we need a top seat.
So why do we need a top sheet (or not)?…
1. It’s just what you’re used to.
Many of our hip friends and readers have never thought about top sheets. Because the top sheet is something that we have always used since childhood. Also, many people said they never thought about the top sheet because every set they ever bought came with one.
2. Your sleeping partner may need a top sheet.
When deciding whether you need a top sheet, someone, or rather, something to think about is your sleeping partner (if you have one). Often, one of you might not be able to sleep without it, but the other might be totally able to sleep without it…or, like my hip buddy, you might want to do it to the hilt. Kick it down, Chelsea shared. 😏 Depending on your reasons, you may have to compromise (whether you like it or not). 😂
3. More laundry.
Perhaps you may feel that washing is more stable with or without a top sheet. Many of us Hip Sidekicks agree that without a top sheet, you’ll need to wash your comforter more regularly. Others think that because the top sheet is on the bed, it just adds to the laundry load in general.
4. Keep your sleep comfortable with the top sheet.
There’s nothing better than crawling into bed after a long day and getting cozy with fresh, clean, crisp sheets. That is, until it gets a little too hot. Adding a topsheet creates a cool barrier and prevents overheating from heavy blankets and comforters. Not only that, but it provides an extra layer and the option to take off the blanket if you get too hot.
5. It can be a hassle!
Are you frustrated with making your bed with so many layers?A top sheet may not be your best option. I find that so many people complain that it’s a hassle. I have to say their points are excellent. Not only is it painful to push them in, but they often end up lopsided or bunched up at the bottom (usually thanks to your sleeping partner). 😉
6. Some people change their minds every season.
The season can influence your decision whether to use a top sheet. During the colder months, some people look forward to tucking into bed with warm and cozy flannel sheets. Come spring or summer, you might be ready to throw them out of bed.
7. Some of the top sheets can’t be missed.
Many of my hip friends who recently purchased Quince bamboo sheets said they were too soft to sleep with. Our hip buddy, Liza, said she tends to go to bed a little earlier to enjoy it longer.
If you’re looking for new sheets, many on our team think you should try Quince Bamboo sheets.
I’ve tested many seats over the years, but this is the first set where my husband didn’t kick the seats away. No matter what your sleeping preferences are, you’ll love these sheets.
