WWe have just witnessed an extraordinary and devastating moment in American history. In 2016, we promised to make sure our coverage of the Donald Trump administration was in time for the moment, and I think we’ve delivered. Throughout these tumultuous four years, we have never minimized or normalized the threat of President Trump’s authoritarianism, and we have recognized President Trump’s lies as the true danger to our democracy: on January 6, 2021. We treated it as a manifestation of that threat.
With only a few months left until President Trump’s re-election, wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the health of American democracy, reproductive rights, inequality, and perhaps most of all, the future of our collective environment are at stake. , but now is the time for us to do so. We will intensify efforts to hold the next president and those around him accountable.
That will be a huge challenge. and we need your help.
Last week, Margaret Sullivan, the Guardian’s US media columnist, detailed in black and white the threat to press freedom posed by President Trump’s re-election.
“Trump poses a clear threat to journalists, news organizations, and press freedom in the United States and around the world,” she wrote. For years, he has incited hatred by calling reporters “enemies of the people” and calling legitimate journalism “fake news.”
“We’re going to go after members of the media,” said Kash Patel, who Trump may nominate to be FBI director or attorney general, adding that Project 2025, Trump’s blueprint for a second term, includes arrests. Journalist email and phone records containing plans to facilitate.
We’re going to fight these threats, but we need brave, well-funded independent journalism to do so. We need coverage that billionaire owners can’t rely on because they fear retaliation from White House bullies.
